Queen Elizabeth to hire 'diversity czar' after Meghan Markle's Oprah interview: report - Page Six

The Queen will appoint a “diversity czar” after Meghan Markle accused the royal family of racism during her bombshell interview with Oprah, the Mail On Sunday reported, citing palace insiders.

In addition to the hire, the monarchy will engage in an upcoming “listen and learn” exercise in which the royals will “seek independent views” on how it can improve diversity efforts encompassing minorities and the LGBT community, the sources said.

“This is an issue which has been taken very seriously across the Households,” a palace source reportedly told the Mail on Sunday. “We have the policies, procedures and programs in place but we haven’t seen the progress we would like and accept more needs to be done. We can always improve.

“We are not afraid to look at new ways of approaching it. The work to do this has been under way for some time now and comes with the full support of the family.”

The diversity-improvement plan follows allegations made by the Duchess of Sussex and husband Prince Harry in their March 12 interview with Oprah Winfrey that there were conversations among the royal family about how dark their son Archie’s skin would be. Prince Harry also said racism played a role in the couple’s decision to flee London for California.

The interview prompted widespread backlash, including calls from Commonwealth nations to drop Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state.

In an official statement issued by the 94-year-old monarch following the interview, she said the racism accusations were “concerning” and “will be addressed by the family privately.”
