Writer/director James Gunn reveals his favorite characters from The Suicide Squad. With Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn took characters like Groot and Rocket the Raccoon and made them household names. As a spiritual reboot and sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad brings back Task Force X members Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) while introducing more characters than perhaps any DC film yet.
During Gunn’s brief misunderstanding with Disney, Warner Bros. hired him to helm a DC property of his choosing with seemingly complete creative control. Naturally, he was drawn to DC’s vast rogues’ gallery filled with misfits and oddballs. The Suicide Squad’s extended roster includes Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Weasel (Sean Gunn), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Mongal (Mayling Ng), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Savant (Michael Rooker), T.D.K. (Nathan Fillion), Javelin (Flula Borg), and Peacemaker (John Cena). Gunn saw enough potential in the latter character, DC’s “douchey Captain America,” to warrant a spinoff series for HBO Max—which he produced, wrote, and directed (mostly). Gunn has also teased that more spinoff shows could be in development.
In anticipation of The Suicide Squad’s release on HBO Max and in theaters, Gunn took over @TwitterMovies to answer questions. The official Twitter account for Peacemaker on HBO Max asked the director his favorite member of the Suicide Squad under the assumption he would say Peacemaker. Read what he had to say below:
“I guess that you could say you’re my favorite character because I am creating a whole TV series with you that’s going to be available on HBO Max early next year, said Gunn. “But I’m not sure you’re actually my favorite character because I have a particular fondness for Sebastian, Ratcatcher 2, Polka Dot Man, and some of the other characters that aren’t quite as big of douchebags as you are Peacemaker, but you’re going to make a great TV show and that’s something.”
Being a champion of outcasts, it makes sense that Gunn would mention Cleo Cazo, a.k.a. Ratcatcher 2 and her pet rat Sebastian. Going into The Suicide Squad, the focus may be on characters played by stars like Robbie and Elba, but Melchior’s Ratcatcher is very much the heart of the film. She dubbed herself Ratcatcher 2 after her father, the original Ratcatcher, both of whom can control an army of small rodents. Unlike other members of Task Force X, Celo is well, nice. She is somehow able to bond with even the most dangerous members of the Suicide Squad like King Shark and Bloodsport.
The Suicide Squad is already certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising its humor, heart, and utilization of an R-rating. The film’s highs are a byproduct of its quirky ensemble—from Peacemaker and Bloodsport’s egos to Abner Krill’s surprisingly useful polka dots. The Suicide Squad doesn’t necessarily know its place in the larger DCEU (nor does any other film for that matter) but it has a unique understanding of its characters because of Gunn, who clearly takes pride in paying homage to the work of John Ostrander and other pioneers of the genre. Thanks to Gunn’s favorite characters, The Suicide Squad is anything but boring.
