The Covid parade of awards shows continues this Easter Sunday (no rest for the kudos weary) with the not-so-live broadcast of the 27th annual SAG Awards, honoring the actors union choices for the best of the year in both movies and TV. When we say “not-so-live” we mean it. For the first time in its 27-year history, the show (postponed from original March 14 date after the Grammys swooped in and stole it) and all winners acceptances has been completely pre-recorded for this virutal presentation. And on top of that, SAG promised to keep the whole thing to an hour, unheard of in the bloated awards show universe. No matter who actually wins (or more correctly has already won) perhaps the biggest surprise will be how SAG managed to keep it all a well kept secret until now when those victors will be revealed to the world in the TV broadcast simulcast on TBS and TNT at 9 pm ET (6 pm PT), with a rebroadcast beginning one hour past the conclusion of the show. Television nominees were all gathered by category via zoom with winners speeches recorded last Wednesday, while the same process was repeated for those nominees in the five big movie categories on Thursday. Everyone involved or who had access to the process, had to sign extensive non-disclosure agreements, and in a town with more leaks than your shower, somehow the veil of secrecy has not been broached.
As for the SAG race itself all eyes will be on who takes home not only the four individual acting prizes, but also the all important Cast in a Motion Picture, SAG’s version of Best Picture and also a harbinger of what could happen at the Oscars. It should be interesting this year, if not all that predictive, as the pundit-pronounced Oscar front runner Nomadland was not even nominated for its cast, perhaps because most of them were non-pros, actual “nomads”, and working actors might be loathe to give their highest honor to someone who isn’t one of them. Frances McDormand is one of them of course, and she represents the Searchlight awards juggernaut’s only SAG nomination for Lead Actress, an award she took for the second time just three years ago. Last year’s Cast award winner was a surprise, going to the all Korean ensemble of Parasite, a moment that might be credited for giving that film unstoppable momentum all the way to sweeping the Oscars. Can the Korean-American film Minari find similar success this year, or will it go to the starry ensemble of The Trial Of The Chicago 7, the film that offered the biggest amount of jobs to actors among the five nominees, the other three contenders featuring sterling Black ensemble casts including Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and One Night In Miami. The latter trio failed to gain Best Picture nominations at the Oscars but will that be a factor at all? However if either Chicago 7 or Minari win it could give a boost to either one and their hopes of upsetting Nomadland three weeks from tonight. History could also be made tonight by the late Chadwick Boseman who set SAG records with four individual nominations for Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, and as a cast member of two of the nominated ensembles. Last year all four single SAG winners went on to receive Oscars as well, and the guild generally has an excellent track record in that regard.
As for the TV races, SAG for much of its awards show history, has the opposite effect on the Emmys, often seeming to follow rather than lead, but this year they could make up for that since a lot of much buzzed new water cooler shows are in the running and could make an impact later on with Television Academy voters based on what SAG has to say. Look out for the fortunes of such SAG nominees as Bridgerton, Lovecraft Country, Ted Lasso, The Flight Attendant, The Undoing, and The Queens Gambit as they try to hold off more veteran contenders and Emmy nominees winners like Schitt’s Creek, The Crown, Better Call Saul, Dead To Me, Ozark, as well as I Know This Much Is True’s Mark Ruffalo, who is looking for a triple crown by adding a SAG trophy to his Emmy and Golden Globe.
We’ll be updating the winners list live, so refresh for updates.
