‘Arthur’ TV show canceled after 25 years on PBS Kids - syracuse.com

Longtime children’s TV show “Arthur” has been canceled after 25 years on PBS Kids.

“In the winter of 2022, the 25th and final season of ‘Arthur’ will debut,” EP Carol Greenwald told IGN on Tuesday. “‘Arthur’ will continue to be available on PBS KIDS for years to come. Producer GBH and PBS KIDS are continuing to work together on additional Arthur content, sharing the lessons of Arthur and his friends in new ways.”

According to TVLine, “Arthur” first premiered in 1996 and has aired more than 240 episodes, becoming the longest-running children’s animated series in U.S. television history, and the second longest-running cartoon behind “The Simpsons.” The show, which aimed at children ages 4-8, has multiple generations of fans and screenshots often circulate on social media as memes.

Based on the “Arthur Adventure” books by Marc Brown, the show follows an aardvark named Arthur Read and his family, including his younger sister D.W., in the fictional town of Elwood City. “Arthur” has won six Daytime Emmys and a Peabody Award for its coverage of important issues, including a gay wedding episode centered on Arthur’s teacher Mr. Ratburn and his partner Patrick, which was boycotted by an Alabama public television station.

According to Newsweek, rumors of “Arthur” coming to an end have been circulating since 2018 when Bink/Dad voice actor Bruce Dinsmore said on Twitter he had recorded his last episode of the series. That same year, Oasis Animation said they were under contract through season 25, and have apparently not renewed it past next year.

The final season of “Arthur” will premiere next year, but a final episode date has not been announced.
